Drugs - Identification of suspect (CCTV analysis)
Anonymised case study based upon a real assignment undertaken by CCL-Forensics for an English law enforcement agency.
CCL-Forensics was asked to analyse some CCTV footage which was to be key evidence in a drugs case.
The police investigator originally wanted to use the footage to identify a suspect by his facial features, but the quality of the film was too poor. Unfortunately, the images were also too low-resolution to be used to identify and match the suspect’s clothing.
This might have been the end of the story, but CCL-Forensics’ CCTV expert re-examined some known footage of the suspect and noticed that the he had an unusual and distinctive gait (style of walking and standing). The analyst took frames from the known footage that highlighted the suspect’s legs and feet, and did the same with the CCTV exhibit footage.
In this way, the analyst provided comparative still images to show the similarities between the legs and feet in the known footage and in the CCTV footage.
The analyst also edited several sequences to show side by side to highlight the similarities of the unusual gait between the films.
The suspect initially denied that he was the subject of the CCTV footage - and continued to deny his presence throughout the interview stages - but when police showed him the gait comparison film, he pleaded guilty.
By finding an alternative solution to the law enforcement agency’s problem, CCL-Forensics helped to avoid a costly and lengthy trial.
