Trading Standards Case Study - CD piracy
The following is an anonymised case study based on a real assignment conducted by CCL-Forensics for a Trading Standards Authority.
CCL-Forensics was instructed by a Trading Standards Authority who had seized a large number of suspected illegally-copied CDs and DVDs during a raid.
A number of computers were also taken from the premises, and passed to CCL-Forensics.
Analysts at our laboratory in Warwickshire carried out a preview on the computers seized, and quickly identified those containing potential evidence.
Following the scope set out by the Trading Standards Investigators, evidence was found on the computer of software which could be used to download the material, along with a number of files which showed how the software had been used. In addition, there was evidence of a large number of CD/DVD graphics, along with tools and software to convert them to different formats.
In addition, there was evidence that some of the exhibits had been connected together - which proved a link between them.
